1st and 2nd Trimester Obstetrical Ultrasound FAQ

Do I need a full bladder?
Yes, 1st Trimester patients only need to drink three 8oz glasses of water 1 hour prior to their appointment.

2nd Trimester patients do not require a full bladder and do not need to drink any water.

How soon will I get my results?
If requested at the time of scheduling, results can be obtained on the same day as your appointment. A report will be sent to your physician within 24-48 hours of your visit or sooner if necesary.

Is ultrasound safe?
There have been no documented biologic effects of ultrasound on the human fetus. The use of ultrasound should be limited to medical indications.

Can ultrasound detect all fetal abnormalities?
No. Although, ultrasound can detect many fetal abnormalities, ultrasound is not sensitive for the detection of all fetal defects.

When should ultrasound be performed?
The timing of obstetrical ultrasound varies with clinical indications. For example, during the first trimester ultrasound can readily confirm dates, viability, presence of twins and evaluate nuchal translucency (NT). During the second and third trimester, ultrasound is useful in detecting fetal anomalies, placenta previa, and evaluating fetal growth.

When is the best time to have an anatomic survey to check for fetal abnormalities?
19 to 22 weeks is ideal if the goal is to evaluate fetal anatomy, determine gender, and establish menstrual age of the pregnancy in one exam.

Do I need a referral from a physician to come to Peninsula Ultrasound?
Yes. A doctor's order is required.
